Huawei Technologies faces a criminal trial in New York.
The company is accused of serious crimes.
Prosecutors say Huawei stole technology.
They also say Huawei planned to steal U.S. trade secrets.
And they say Huawei did wire and bank fraud.
Jury selection started Tuesday afternoon.
Opening statements will probably start Wednesday or later.
The court papers also say Huawei did business in North Korea.
This was against U.S. rules.
The papers say Huawei put in surveillance equipment.
This equipment helped Iran watch protesters in 2009.
Huawei tried to stop the case.
It said the claims are not clear.
It said the U.S. is using its power too far.
Huawei said the prosecutors’ story is "demonstrably false."
It said new ideas and respect for other companies’ ideas make it successful.
Huawei is the world’s biggest maker of wireless network equipment.
But it cannot sell equipment to U.S. phone companies.
The U.S. worries about security.
Canada and Britain also banned Huawei.
Now Huawei is making computer chips.
People need more chips because of artificial intelligence.
The U.S. told the public about the charges in early 2019.
At that time, Donald Trump was president.
Prosecutors said Huawei used a Hong Kong company called Skycom.
Skycom sold equipment to Iran.
This was against U.S. rules.
They also charged Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s chief financial officer.
They said she tricked HSBC about Iran business.
Meng was arrested in Canada in 2018.
She was freed in September 2021 in a prisoner exchange.
China called the U.S. actions "economic bullying."
