President Donald Trump said this week that he would welcome data centers in any town or state.

He said they bring jobs and tax money.

He made the comment at the White House.

He was with cryptocurrency leaders.

But candidates in close midterm races are not using his message.

Voter anger about data centers has become a big political issue.

The centers can be bigger than football stadiums.

They use more energy than small cities.

People who live nearby worry about higher electricity bills, water use, pollution, and changes to their community.

The Senate Republicans’ campaign group warned that data center anger could cost them a seat.

In Ohio, Democratic nominee Sherrod Brown is running attack ads against Republican Sen. Jon Husted.

Brown calls him the “face of data centers.”

A Republican memo said data centers are “the anchor hanging around Husted’s neck.”

Most registered voters do not want a data center in their area.

That is from a July Fox News poll.

In Nevada, Democrat Aaron Ford tied Trump’s statement to Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo.

Ford said he would stop new state tax breaks for data centers.

In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott faces attacks from his Democratic challenger about data center development.

Abbott has promised to act more strongly.

But Trump criticized the change.

He said, “I think it’s a mistake.”

Even some of Trump’s allies are using data centers for attacks.

U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany is running for Wisconsin governor.

He released an ad that calls his Democratic opponent “Data Center David Crowley.”

Crowley said Tiffany is lying.

He said Tiffany has supported data center legislation in Congress.
