President Donald Trump sent a memo on Friday. He wants the U.S. military and security groups to use artificial intelligence faster. He said the push must protect civil rights. He also said it must keep watch over robot weapons.
The memo went to several Cabinet officials. They include the defense secretary, the homeland security secretary, the attorney general, and the director of national intelligence. Trump also ordered a new rule on robot weapon systems. He wants it to match AI’s fast-changing power.
The memo tells the Defense Department to use AI in safe ways. It must respect the chain of command and the power to act. It also says AI must not block free speech. It must not add political bias. It must not watch Americans in an illegal way.
The Pentagon already uses more AI for battle targets and supply work. But worries about human watch have grown. This is true in fights with tech companies. It is also true after war use of AI in Gaza and Lebanon. At a conference in Tampa, U.S. military leaders said AI could help. But they also said people must make careful choices.
