Similar to many creators in the field, Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, has sparked controversy this week on social media with its preoccupation with South Africa's racial politics, generating unwelcome assertions regarding the persecution and even "genocide" of white people.
The chatbot, developed by Musk's xAI, repeatedly referenced "white genocide" in public responses to users of Musk's social media platform X, who posed a range of questions largely unrelated to South Africa.
One discussion revolved around the streaming service Max reverting to the HBO moniker, while others touched on video games or baseball, but quickly devolved into seemingly irrelevant remarks that appeared to endorse violence against white farmers in South Africa – a subject Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa, frequently comments on via his X account.
Intrigued by reports of Grok's erratic performance, computer scientist Jen Golbeck decided to investigate firsthand, sharing a photograph from the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and wryly questioning, "Is this real life?".
Grok initiated his response to Goldbek by stating that claims of a "white genocide" are highly contentious, with some arguing that white farmers are targets of violence, citing inflammatory rhetoric such as the "Kill the Boer" song and farm attacks as evidence.
This incident represents a cutting-edge example of the intricate interplay between automation and human engineering, offering a glimpse into the motivations behind such pronouncements from a generative AI chatbot trained on extensive datasets.
In an interview on Thursday, Professor Golbeck of the University of Maryland stated that "it hardly matters what you say to Grok; it will still generate responses about white genocide. It seems clear someone hard-coded that response, or a variation of it, and due to an oversight, it's appearing far more frequently than intended."
Neither Musk nor his companies have offered any explanation regarding Grok's responses, which appear to have been removed and propagation ceased by Thursday; neither xAI nor X responded to requests for comment via email by Thursday.
For years, Musk has criticized the "woke AI" outputs from rival chatbots like Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT, positioning Grok as an alternative committed to the "maximum truth-seeking."
Musk has also criticized competitors for their lack of transparency regarding their AI systems, yet Thursday's unexplained absence left those outside the company to rely on speculation.
"Tech investor Paul Graham voiced his concerns on X, stating that Grok's random outbursts regarding white genocide in South Africa felt like a bug stemming from a recent patch. He expressed his hope that this wasn't the case, emphasizing the gravity of the situation if a widely used AI were being subject to impromptu editorial interventions by those in control."
Graham's post was followed by what appeared to be a sardonic response from Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and a rival of Musk.
Altman stated that there are multiple ways such an event could have transpired, expressing his confidence that xAI would soon furnish a comprehensive and transparent account, a statement made in the context of Musk's lawsuit against him stemming from disputes related to the founding of OpenAI.
While some sought clarification directly from Grok itself, discerning whether its explanations were genuine or fabrications – a phenomenon known as "hallucination" common among chatbots – proved challenging.
As a long-time advisor to President Trump, Musk has repeatedly accused South Africa's Black-led government of anti-white bias, echoing claims that certain politicians are actively inciting "white genocide."
Musk's and Grok's commentary gained traction this week following the Trump administration's decision to resettle a limited number of white South Africans in the U.S. as refugees, a move intended as the vanguard of a broader relocation initiative for members of the Afrikaner minority, even as Trump curtailed refugee programs and immigration from elsewhere globally; Trump had asserted that Afrikaners faced "genocide" in their native country, a claim vehemently rejected by the South African government.
Numerous responses noted that Grok quoted lyrics from an old anti-apartheid song, urging Black people to rise against oppression, which Musk and others condemned as promoting white genocide, centering on the lyric "Kill the Boer," with "Boer" referring to white farmers.
Golbeck posits that Grok's responses appear to be "hard-coded" due to their consistent focus on similar key points, a stark contrast to the typically more stochastic outputs of other chatbots; she expresses concern that this consistency could be problematic in a world where individuals increasingly rely on Grok and rival AI chatbots for answers.
She stated, "We're in a situation where those managing this algorithm can easily manipulate what is presented as truth. It's deeply problematic that people – wrongly, in my view – believe these algorithms can act as arbiters of truth."
