A former delivery worker has admitted to working with others to steal more than $2.5 million from DoorDash by using fake orders.
Federal prosecutors said that Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri admitted in court on Tuesday that he helped plan a phone fraud.
Prosecutors said that Devagiri, who is 30 years old and from Newport Beach, California, worked with three other people in 2020 and 2021 to trick the San Francisco delivery company out of money.
Prosecutors explained that Devagiri used customer accounts to make expensive orders. Then, he used an employee's login information to access DoorDash and change the orders to delivery drivers he and his friends controlled. The officials said that Devagiri then made the fake driver accounts say they had delivered the orders, even though they hadn't. This tricked DoorDash into paying the fake drivers for deliveries that never happened.
Prosecutors said that Devagiri would then change the order status from "delivered" back to "processing" in the DoorDash system. He would then re-assign the order to himself or his friends, restarting the process.
The former delivery worker admitted in November 2023 that he took part in the plan to commit phone fraud.
Devagiri is the third person to be found guilty of being involved in the plan. He could go to prison for up to 20 years and have to pay a fine of $250,000. He will go back to court on September 16.
