Federal prosecutors stated that a former delivery driver has pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to steal over $2.5 million through fraudulent orders paid for by DoorDash. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri admitted guilt in a San Jose federal court on Tuesday, charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Prosecutors reported that Devagiri, 30, from Newport Beach, California, confessed to working with three others in 2020 and 2021 to defraud the San Francisco-based food delivery company. Devagiri allegedly exploited customer accounts to place high-value orders, then used an employee's credentials to access DoorDash software and manually reassign the orders to driver accounts controlled by him and his accomplices. Officials stated that Devagiri then manipulated DoorDash's computer system to mark these bogus driver accounts as having completed deliveries that never occurred, thus triggering payments for these nonexistent deliveries. Prosecutors further allege that Devagiri would then use the DoorDash software to change the order status from "delivered" back to "processing," restarting the process by manually reassigning the order to himself and his co-conspirators' driver accounts. The former delivery worker, who is no longer employed by DoorDash, pleaded guilty in November 2023 to participating in the wire fraud conspiracy, according to prosecutors. Devagiri is the third defendant to be convicted for involvement in the conspiracy. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with his next court appearance scheduled for September 16th.
