According to financial documents cited by The Information, OpenAI anticipates that by 2030, the proportion of its revenue paid to key investor and partner Microsoft will be lower than at present.
This news comes after OpenAI recently changed its approach to a big restructuring plan. The new plan would make its part that makes money a public benefit corporation (PBC), but it would still be controlled by its part that doesn't make money.
OpenAI currently has a revenue-sharing agreement to give Microsoft 20% of its gross income, but the AI firm has indicated to investors its intention to distribute 10% of revenue among its business partners, including Microsoft, by the close of this decade, according to The Information.
Microsoft has allocated substantial financial resources, exceeding tens of billions, into OpenAI, and their present contractual agreement, extending until 2030, stipulates mutual revenue sharing. This arrangement additionally grants Microsoft intellectual property rights to OpenAI's technology within its AI offerings and exclusive access to OpenAI's APIs through its Azure platform.
Microsoft has not yet sanctioned OpenAI's suggested corporate arrangement, Bloomberg disclosed on Monday, as the larger technology firm reportedly aims to guarantee the new structure safeguards its substantial multi-billion-dollar investment.
Neither OpenAI nor Microsoft provided immediate responses to inquiries for comment.
