Madison Keys and Flavio Cobolli took to the court early Tuesday at the U.S. Open, where inclement weather posed a threat to disrupt the schedule over the ensuing days.

Showers that began Monday night and were expected to persist intermittently through midweek disrupted play across all outer courts, restricting action to Arthur Ashe Stadium and Louis Armstrong Stadium, both of which are equipped with retractable roofs.

Keys, the No. 22 seed, was set to face Alina Korneeva in the opening match at Ashe, while Cobolli, the men's No. 5 seed, quickly lost the first set to Francisco Comesana on Armstrong.

Among those slated to take the court but forced to bide their time were second seed Elena Rybakina, twelfth seed Belinda Bencic, and thirty-second seed Maria Sakkari.

Rybakina has multiple pathways to the No. 1 ranking at the U.S. Open.

She was up against American Thea Frodin, a 17-year-old from California who served as the body double for actor Demi Singleton, who portrayed Serena Williams, in the 2021 film “King Richard.”

Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, No. 17 Alex Eala, and men’s No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev were scheduled for the evening session on the third and final day of the opening round.
