On Monday morning, team owner John Fisher spoke to a big group of people with dirt and building machines behind him. The place where home plate will be at the new Athletics ballpark was also behind him. He said, "We are Vegas' team."
Many people watched as the team started to build their new baseball park. Important people like Rob Manfred from MLB, local leaders, and famous former players were there. Children from Little League also watched. The new park will cost a lot of money, $1.75 billion, and many people can go there, 33,000. It should be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have said they will give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said he was sure it would be done by 2028. He said that the workers are here and ready to start.
It's good to see the support today. The next three years will be important for the community, the building project, and jobs. You will see many good things as this building starts to be built, maybe even tonight.
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He was important when the team moved from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped get permission and build the Allegiant Stadium, which cost 2 billion dollars.
The Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years, sharing a stadium with the A's, while their new stadium was being built. The Raiders kept a good connection with their fans in Oakland, even though they were going to leave. But A's fans were very angry because their team was leaving, and they did not like how it happened.
Because of that, the team couldn't stay in Oakland, and they played their last season in the old stadium last year. Now, the A's are playing in a smaller stadium in West Sacramento for at least three years, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher said, "We are a team from this town. We want to get young fans first. If children like us, their parents will also like us. It does not take much time to get fans, but it takes a lot of time to win games."
We want to keep improving what we have now. Building a team is like building something else. It can take a long time. It's like building a stadium. We think we have what we need to be successful.
Bally's owns a big piece of land, 35 acres, at Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. They will build the stadium on nine acres of this land. Last October, they pulled down the Tropicana's tall buildings at night to make space for the stadium.
The A's want to do well in their temporary home, and they also want to get ready for their future home. Each player has a picture of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one arm and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is because of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved important documents. These documents are the final big steps for the A's to become the team of Las Vegas.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House. It has five parts that are on top of each other. A big glass window behind the playing field lets you see the Las Vegas Strip and feel like you are outside. The cool air will come from the seats, not from one big air conditioner.
This will be the smallest stadium in MLB. The Tampa Bay Rays usually play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people when the top seats are not used. If all seats are open, it can hold almost 40,000 people.
The Rays are playing in a smaller stadium this year because a hurricane broke their usual stadium. We don't know where the team will play later, and new people might own the team soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field. It now has 34,830 seats. When the park opened in 1994, it had 43,345 seats, so it has fewer seats now.
The A's will be the fourth big sports team in Las Vegas. The Raiders, the Golden Knights (NHL), and the Aces (WNBA) are already there.
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for us. Many people live here, other sports are popular, and many tourists visit. I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
