On Monday morning, team owner John Fisher spoke to a big group of people with dirt and building machines behind him. The place where the baseball field will be was also in the background. He said, “We are Vegas’ team.”
Many people watched as the baseball team started building their new stadium. Important people like Rob Manfred from MLB, government leaders, famous former players, and young baseball players were there. The stadium will cost a lot of money, about $1.75 billion, and 33,000 people can go there. It should be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have agreed to give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said he believes it will be finished in 2028. He said that the workers are ready to start.
"It's good to see everyone happy today. This project will be great for our town in the next few years, with new jobs and a new building that will start being built very soon."
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He helped the team move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped build the Allegiant Stadium, which cost 2 billion dollars.
Before their new stadium was ready, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years. They played in the same stadium as the A's. The Raiders still felt connected to the Bay Area, but A's fans were angry because their team was leaving and they didn't like how it happened.
The team could not stay in Oakland, so they played their last season in the old stadium last year. Now, they are playing about an hour away in West Sacramento for at least three years, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
"Fisher said, "We're a team from here. We want to get young fans first. If kids like us, their parents will too. It doesn't take long to do this. What takes a lot of time is to become a winning team."
"We want to keep improving what we have now, because making a team is like making anything. It can take a long time. It's like building a stadium. We believe we have what we need to be successful."
The stadium will be built on land that Bally's owns, near Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. Workers took down the old Tropicana hotel in October to make space for the new stadium.
The A's want to do well where they are now, but they also need to get ready for their future home. Each player has a picture of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one arm and a Las Vegas sign on the other. This is part of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved important documents for the A's team. This means the A's will soon be the team for Las Vegas.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House. It has a big glass window where you can see the Las Vegas Strip. The air conditioning will come from the seats, not from one big system.
This will be the smallest stadium in MLB. The Tampa Bay Rays usually play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people when the top seats are not open. When all seats are open, it has almost 40,000 seats.
The Rays are playing in a small stadium this year, like the A's. This is because a hurricane damaged their usual stadium. We don't know where the Rays will play in the future, and new people might own the team soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field, which has about 34,830 seats now. It used to have more, around 43,345, when it opened in 1994.
The A's baseball team will move to Las Vegas. They will join other big sports teams there, like the Raiders (football), the Golden Knights (hockey), and the Aces (women's basketball).
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for us. This is because of the people who live here, how well other sports have done, and the many tourists. I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
