On Monday morning, team owner John Fisher stood in front of many people. Behind him, there was a lot of dirt, building trucks, and the place where the new baseball field will be. He told everyone, "We are now the team of Vegas."
Many people watched the team start building a new baseball park. Important people like Rob Manfred from MLB, local leaders, famous old players, and young baseball players were there. The park will cost a lot of money, $1.75 billion, and can hold 33,000 people. They want it to be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County said they will give up to $380 million of public money for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said, "I'm sure this will be finished in 2028. The workers here are ready to start."
It's good to see that today proves this is a good idea. We will see what the next three years mean for the people here, for the building work, and for new jobs. You will see all these things as the building starts to grow, maybe even tonight.
Badain did a similar job when he worked for the Raiders football team. He helped the team move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020. He also helped to get permission and build the Allegiant Stadium, which cost 2 billion dollars.
The Raiders stayed in Oakland for three years, sharing a stadium with the A's, while their new stadium was being built. The Raiders kept a good relationship with their fans in the Bay Area, even though they were going to move. But A's fans were very angry because their team was leaving, and they did not like how it was happening.
Because of that, the team could not stay in Oakland. They played their last season in the old stadium last year. Now, the A's are playing in a smaller stadium in West Sacramento, California, for at least three years. They are waiting to move to Las Vegas.
We are a team from this town, Fisher said. We want to start with the youngest fans. If we get the kids, we also get their parents. It does not take as much time as you think. What takes a lot of time is to have a team that wins.
"We want to keep improving and growing stronger, and making a team is like building something. It can take a long time, like building a stadium. We believe we have what we need to do well."
The stadium will be built on a part of Bally's land. This land is 35 acres big and is at Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The old buildings there were taken down in October to make space for the new stadium.
The A's want to do well in their temporary home, but they are also getting ready for their future. Each player wears a patch of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is part of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority said yes to important papers about the A's team moving. This means the A's are almost ready to become Las Vegas' team.
The stadium looks like the Sydney Opera House. It has five parts that are on top of each other. A big glass window lets you see the Las Vegas Strip. The air conditioning will come from the seats, not from one big system.
This will be the smallest stadium in MLB. The Tampa Bay Rays usually play at Tropicana Field. It can hold 25,000 people when some seats are not used. When all seats are open, it has almost 40,000 seats.
The Rays are playing in a small stadium this year, like the A's. This is because a hurricane damaged their usual stadium. We don't know where the Rays will play in the future, and new people might buy the team soon.
Cleveland plays baseball at Progressive Field. Now, about 34,830 people can sit there. When it opened in 1994, it had room for more people, about 43,345.
The A's baseball team is moving to Las Vegas. They will be the fourth big sports team there, joining the Raiders, Golden Knights, and Aces.
Manfred said, "I think this is a good place for us. This is because of the people, how well other sports have done, and the many tourists." He also said, "I am sure this team will do very well in Las Vegas."
