AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete, won gold in both the girls' high jump and triple jump at the California high school track and field championship. Even though Hernandez won, there were protests from people who do not think transgender athletes should compete in women's sports. The California Interscholastic Federation put this new rule in place because of Hernandez's success and to follow California law. This law lets transgender students compete on teams that are separated by sex, matching their gender identity. However, critics say that the new rule just makes things more confusing. This situation is happening at a time when a recent survey shows that about 7 out of 10 adults in the US believe that transgender female athletes should not be allowed to play in girls' and women's sports at any level.
