Serhou Guirassy and Borussia Dortmund achieved something unique in 2025 – they defeated Barcelona. However, it was still not enough to get to the Champions League semifinals.
Even though Guirassy scored three goals, his team still lost because Dortmund won 3-1 against Barcelona, and this wasn't enough to win overall (5-3 loss).
After losing 4-0 in the first game of the quarterfinal, Dortmund had nothing to lose on Tuesday and attacked Barcelona right away, which surprised the visiting team.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, who knows Dortmund well from Germany and has often won against them, expected a difficult second game despite being four goals ahead, because of the enthusiastic home fans.
"I had a feeling something like this would happen," Flick told Amazon Prime. "Today, we must congratulate Dortmund for playing so well, and also congratulate my team for reaching the semifinals."
The game was unusually quiet for Barcelona's main attackers, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski. They had scored 12 and 11 goals in the Champions League this season. The only time either of them came close to scoring was when Raphinha took a weak shot at Dortmund's goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel.
Coach Niko Kovac called Guirassy Dortmund's "life insurance" after a game where he continued to become very famous quickly. This game also put him at the top of the list for scoring in the Champions League this season. Kovac said that like all strikers, Serhou just needs his teammates to help him, and they did that today.
You could say that Dortmund probably lost the quarterfinal in the first game. Also, earlier that day, their captain Emre Can and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka were unable to play because they were injured.
For a while, Guirassy made difficult things seem possible.
Guirassy missed some opportunities to score in the first game and at the start of Tuesday's match, but he scored easily from a penalty after the Barcelona goalkeeper crashed into Pascal Gross.
Guirassy scored with his head in the 49th minute to make it 2-0, and then a Dortmund player, Ramy Bensebaini, accidentally kicked the ball into his own goal, making the game much more difficult for Dortmund.
Guirassy used Ronald Araujo's mistake in defense to score his third goal from close to the goal in the 76th minute. This made him the top scorer in the Champions League this season with 13 goals.
This gave Dortmund new hope of making a great comeback in the Champions League, like Barcelona did against Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, but Barcelona still won in the end.
Barcelona will play either Inter Milan or Bayern Munich in the semifinals. This is the first time they have reached this stage of the Champions League since the 2018-19 season. In the other game on Tuesday, PSG reached the semifinals by winning 5-4 against Aston Villa over two matches, even though they lost the second match 3-2.
This was Barcelona's first loss in any competition since December 21. They also lost in the Champions League for the first time since September. This was only the seventh loss in 50 games with Flick as coach. Before this, the German coach had won all seven games against Dortmund when he was the coach of Barcelona and Bayern.
Dortmund might have to wait some time before the Champions League song is played at their stadium again.
Last year, the team that came second in the Champions League is now eighth in the German league. They are six points away from getting into the Champions League again, and there are only five games left.
