Team owner John Fisher stood in front of a crowd on Monday morning. Behind him were construction vehicles and piles of dirt, showing where the new Athletics baseball park will be built. He told everyone, "We are Vegas' team."
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, government officials, and famous Athletics players like Rollie Fingers and Dave Stewart, along with many others, watched the team celebrate the start of building a new $1.75 billion stadium. This stadium will hold 33,000 people and should be ready for the 2028 season.
Nevada and Clark County have agreed to provide up to $380 million in public funds for the project.
Team president Marc Badain said he was sure it would be done by 2028, and the local workers were ready to start right away.
It's good to see the positive impact of today and what the next three years will bring for the community. This includes the building project, new jobs, and other developments that will emerge as construction begins, possibly even tonight.
Badain had a similar experience when he worked for the NFL's Raiders. He was important in their move from Oakland to Las Vegas in 2020, and also in getting the $2 billion Allegiant Stadium approved and built.
Before Allegiant Stadium was finished, the Raiders stayed in Oakland for three seasons, sharing a stadium with the A's. The Raiders kept a strong connection with the Bay Area, even though they were a team that was about to leave. However, A's fans were very angry about their team's upcoming move and how it was handled.
This made it impossible for the team to stay in Oakland, and they played their final season in the old stadium last year. The A's are now playing about an hour away in West Sacramento, California, at a smaller stadium for at least three years, while they wait to move to Las Vegas.
Fisher said that as a local team, they wanted to attract young fans. He believed that if they got the children interested, their parents would also become supporters. He explained that building a winning team takes a lot of time, more than just getting people to support them at first.
We want to keep improving what we have, and building a team takes time, just like any other project. We believe we have what we need to be very successful.
Bally's owns a large 35-acre property at Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard. The new stadium will be built on nine acres of this land. The Tropicana hotel towers were demolished overnight in October to clear the area for the new ballpark.
The A's team is trying to do well in their temporary home while also getting ready for their future. Every A's player wears a patch of Sacramento's Tower Bridge on one sleeve and a Las Vegas logo on the other. This is part of a three-year agreement with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
In December, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority approved the lease, an agreement not to move the team, and development plans. These were the last important steps for the Athletics to become Las Vegas' team.
Artist's drawings show a stadium with five overlapping parts that look very similar to Australia's famous Sydney Opera House. A large glass window behind the outfield makes it feel like you are outside, with views of the Las Vegas Strip. Instead of one main cooling system, air conditioning will be sent through the seats.
This will be MLB's smallest stadium. However, Tropicana Field, where the Tampa Bay Rays usually play, can hold 25,000 people when its top sections are closed. Normally, it has almost 40,000 seats.
The Rays, like the A's, are playing in a smaller stadium this season because Hurricane Milton damaged their main stadium. It's not clear where Tampa Bay will play in the future, and the team might get new owners soon.
Cleveland plays at Progressive Field, which can now hold 34,830 people. This is fewer than the 43,345 seats it had when it opened in 1994.
The A's will be the fourth big professional team in Las Vegas, joining the Raiders, the NHL's Golden Knights, and the WNBA's Aces.
Manfred stated that factors like population trends, the popularity of other sports, and tourism make this a perfect place for them. He added that he was sure the team would do well in Las Vegas.
