The National Museum of African American History and Culture turns 10 on Thursday.

The party feels like a family reunion.

Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" is part of the plan.

Shanita Brackett is the acting director.

She said the theme is "Welcome Home. Our Legacy Continues."

Events run all weekend.

They are at the museum on the National Mall.

They are also at The Wharf.

Lonnie G. Bunch III is the Smithsonian Secretary.

He was the museum's first director.

He will lead a talk called "Understanding America."

The party comes at a hard time.

President Donald Trump's administration is hostile to the museum.

Last year, Trump signed an executive order.

It wanted to change museums and landmarks that get federal money.

The order told officials to work with Congress.

They should stop the Smithsonian from using federal funds.

The funds should not pay for exhibits that divide Americans by race.

The funds should not pay for exhibits that hurt shared values.

The Interior Department also removed many displays from national monuments.

These displays showed activists, people of color, women and LGBTQ people.

Smithsonian leaders say they still do their work.

No one stops them.

Brackett said the museum has not changed any exhibits.

It has not changed its words either.

She said the museum still believes in its first vision.

That vision is to share "the unvarnished truth" of African American history.

She said only objects that need care have been moved.

She said "nothing has changed."

That includes the casket of Emmett Till.

The Smithsonian gets money from the government and from private donors.

Its rules are complex.

So it is hard to influence it directly.

The idea for this museum is very old.

It goes back over 100 years.

Black Civil War veterans had the idea in 1915.

Congress approved the museum in 2003.

It opened on Sept. 24, 2016.

Since then, close to 14 million visitors have come.

They come from 200 countries.

The museum has also hosted more than 26,000 school groups.
