Pope Leo XIV said he knew one thing. He said he was fighting for attention in Madrid. Bad Bunny is there too.
The Puerto Rican star plays two concerts there this weekend. They are part of a 10-show Spanish tour. Leo joked about young people. He said many would choose Bad Bunny over the pope. But he said some would still come to see him.
The pope spoke as about 500,000 people met in a Madrid square. They came for an evening prayer vigil. Many were young Spaniards. They cheered as Leo rode in the popemobile. He also joined a Spanish version of “Godspell.”
Leo starts a weeklong visit to Spain. He goes to Barcelona and the Canary Islands after Madrid. He said he hopes to bring a message of unity. He said Spain has political and church scandals. He also joked about reports on the Chicago Bears. He said they may move to Hammond, Indiana. He said that was “out of my pay scale.”
Leo was asked about soccer. He said he would support the United States at the upcoming World Cup. He also said he was for all teams. But he added, “Prevost is Real Madrid.” That is his birth name. He also spoke about Ukraine and Lebanon. He said the Catholic Church’s “just war” doctrine is outdated.
Leo also said he wants to visit Normandy, France, one day as pope. He said, “My father was there.” He meant Louis Prevost. Louis Prevost served in the U.S. Navy. He took part in the D-Day landings. The Pentagon says Prevost later became a teacher and school principal in Chicago. Robert Prevost was born there in 1955.
