Bob Mackie was a fashion designer.
People called him the "Designer to the Stars."
He died on Monday in Palm Springs, California.
He was 87 years old.
His publicist said the cause was pneumonia.
A statement on his social media said he lived his 87 years to the fullest.
It said he fulfilled his dream of being a fashion and costume designer.
Mackie defined 1970s Hollywood glamour.
He won nine Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.
He was also nominated for three Oscars.
He designed gowns for Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Sharon Stone, Diana Ross and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
He also made concert costumes for Pink.
He sketched the sheer, beaded gown Marilyn Monroe wore.
She wore it to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy.
Mackie grew up in Southern California.
He was inspired by Technicolor musicals.
He worked for costume designer Edith Head.
Then he joined "The Carol Burnett Show."
He and Burnett became close friends.
They created characters like Starlet O'Hara.
Her curtain-rod dress is now in the Smithsonian.
He later dressed Cher for "The Sonny and Cher Show."
He also dressed her for many Academy Awards.
This included a famous sheer gown she wore to the 1974 Met Gala.
Tributes came from fellow designers and from actors who wore his work.
Kristin Chenoweth called him a "legend."
Isaac Mizrahi wrote that he was heartbroken.
Mackie said his motto was to make people look better than ever.
He did not want to change them.
He also said his outfits were costumes for a character.
They were not just fashion.
