“Schmigadoon!” won best new musical at the Tony Awards. This gives creator Cinco Paul a big comeback. Apple TV canceled the series.

Producer Lorne Michaels said something simple. He said singing, dancing, jokes, and a happy ending are enough. The win also helps Apple reach an unofficial “studio EGOT.” Apple has major awards in TV, film, and music.

Bess Wohl’s “Liberation” won best new play. It also won the Pulitzer Prize for drama this year. The play follows a 1970s Ohio women’s group. The group faces misogyny, racism, and gender roles. Wohl became only the fourth woman to win a Tony for best play. She said she wants women everywhere to use their voices.

“Death of a Salesman” won best play revival. Laurie Metcalf, Nathan Lane, and director Joe Mantello won for it. “Ragtime” won best musical revival. Caissie Levy and Joshua Henry won acting Tonys for the show. John Lithgow won best lead actor in a play for “Giant.” He becomes the oldest man to win a competitive acting Tony at 80.

Pink hosted the ceremony. She opened with a flashy show. Later, she led a large “All That Jazz” performance. Other winners include Shoshana Bean, Lesley Manville, and Qween Jean. Qween Jean becomes the first openly trans Tony winner. The show also has memorial and anniversary songs. It honors “Rent,” “A Chorus Line,” and “The Book of Mormon.”
