Wall Street ended Thursday's trading about where it started.
The day had many sudden changes in direction.
The S&P 500 finished almost flat, down less than 0.1%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 161 points, or 0.3%.
The Nasdaq composite added less than 0.1%.
Stocks have slowed their rise since the S&P 500 neared its all-time high earlier this week.
Pressure from the bond market has grown.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury jumped to 5.20% from 5.11% late Wednesday.
This returned to levels last seen in 2007.
High yields slow the economy because borrowing becomes more expensive.
They also push stock prices down.
Yields followed oil prices, which have been unstable.
This is due to uncertainty about when the war with Iran will let crude oil flow freely from the Middle East.
The price of a barrel of Brent crude fell from $102 to about $99 in minutes at midday.
It then settled at $100.22, up 2.1%.
Rising yields are not only about oil and inflation worries.
The U.S. economy keeps growing, which also supports yields.
A report on Thursday showed fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week.
Traders now see better than even odds that the Federal Reserve will raise rates twice more by year's end.
This comes from CME Group data.
