Bond yields are at their highest in about 20 years.
This matters to people who borrow money.
It matters to people with inflation problems.
It matters to businesses that build AI data centers.
It also matters to people who do not borrow.
Savers can earn more interest from bonds.
They can earn more from high-yield savings accounts.
But stocks in their 401(k) accounts could lose value.
For U.S. taxpayers, higher yields mean the government pays more interest.
So less money is left for other needs.
Governments and big companies need money.
They sell IOUs to investors.
They do not ask banks for loans.
IOUs paid back years later are called bonds.
Investors trade them in the bond market.
A bond may be worth $100 later.
But a buyer can get it now for less.
The bond still pays the same interest rate.
So the new buyer gets a bigger return.
That return is called the yield.
When a bond's price drops, its yield rises.
The opposite is also true.
The U.S. Treasury is the center of the bond market.
Its yields set the base for most other borrowing rates.
A 30-year fixed mortgage rate is one example.
It is often the 10-year Treasury yield plus more.
It depends on the borrower's credit score.
Different Treasury bonds affect different loans.
These include 12-month certificates of deposit and company borrowing.
They do not always move together.
But right now they are all rising.
The 10-year Treasury yield hit nearly 5.18% on Thursday.
That is where it was in 2007.
The yield has climbed since 2020.
It was below 0.50% then.
That was because of the COVID pandemic.
Its rise sped up after the war with Iran.
That sent oil prices higher.
It also sent inflation worries higher.
The average long-term U.S. mortgage rate is now 7%.
That is the first time since early 2025.
High Treasury yields also hurt prices for stocks, gold, and cryptocurrencies.
The recent rise comes from higher oil prices.
It comes from inflation worries.
It comes from more government and corporate debt.
Part of it shows a solid U.S. economy.
That could lead the Federal Reserve to raise rates again.
Yields are climbing worldwide.
This includes Germany and Japan.
