AI stocks fell worldwide on Monday.

Industry leaders had warned that a slowdown is needed for humanity's safety.

Oil prices also jumped early and briefly pushed the 10-year Treasury yield to 5%.

Still, gains in many non-AI stocks and a midday pullback in oil limited Wall Street's losses.

The S&P 500 fell just 0.5%, and more stocks in the index rose than fell.

The Dow dropped 152 points, or 0.3%.

The Nasdaq sank 0.6% after recovering most of an early 1.3% loss.

AI stocks were already under pressure over worries their prices rose too high.

Those concerns grew after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for a deliberate global slowdown in AI development.

He cited safety risks.

Nvidia fell 3.4% and weighed heaviest on the market.

SpaceX dropped 2% after Elon Musk said he agreed with Amodei.

SoftBank Group lost 10.7% in Tokyo after OpenAI's Sam Altman also backed the idea of a slowdown.

Altman told Fortune that OpenAI would likely wait until next year to sell its stock publicly.

That would delay a payout for SoftBank and other early investors.

South Korea's Kospi fell 3.3% on losses in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

President Donald Trump downplayed the need to check AI development.

He said he worried about losing an edge over China.

He said on social media that the only guardrail needed is a strong and smart president.

Some software stocks rose, including Intuit, Autodesk, and Adobe.

Oil kept climbing as Middle East fighting squeezed crude supplies.

Brent rose 1% to $105.68 after nearing $110.

The 10-year Treasury yield later eased to 4.98%.
