On Tuesday, Meta unveiled Muse, a personal artificial intelligence agent designed for individuals aged 18 and over who require assistance with routine tasks such as scheduling, shopping, and, as the company phrases it, converting “long-term goals into action plans.”
The parent company behind Instagram and Facebook is underscoring the safety and privacy features of the agent, which is currently available exclusively in the U.S.
Muse, Meta stated, operates within a dedicated, secure virtual machine that accommodates both the agent and the user’s data.
Users can interact with the agent through a dedicated application known as Muse, or alternatively via WhatsApp.
It is capable of managing straightforward operations such as dispatching emails or arranging travel, as well as more complex, sustained objectives like devising a year-round fitness regimen or establishing a new enterprise.
Once a person shares a goal with Muse, it assists them in devising a personalized plan and coordinating their time and resources, subsequently advancing the work autonomously.
It can launch a browser, complete forms, and negotiate on their behalf,” Meta stated in a blog post.
Technology firms are promoting AI agents as the subsequent advancement following chatbots, which are capable of addressing queries and retrieving data yet refrain from executing actions on behalf of the user.
At its core, an AI agent operates like a conventional, hand-coded program that performs a specific function, such as launching an application.
However, when integrated with a large language model, it can tap into a repository of knowledge, allowing it to carry out tasks without requiring explicit, step-by-step guidance.
Consequently, rather than merely assisting you in composing an email's text, it could, in theory, oversee the entire workflow—from receiving a colleague's message, deducing your likely response, to dispatching the reply autonomously.
For Meta, the agent aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ambition for an AI superintelligence accessible to “everyone.”
He articulated this vision last month in a 6,500-word essay published online.
In the document that critics dismissed as far-fetched, Zuckerberg said his company is working toward an era in which everyone will have the tools to start new businesses, receive PhD-level tutoring, and get personalized lifestyle advice.
“Everyone will possess an exceptionally capable personal agent that comprehends you, your aspirations, and all that you hold dear.
This agent will operate around the clock on your behalf to enhance your relationships, health, career, finances, household management, pastimes, and beyond,” Zuckerberg wrote.
“It will liberate time for pursuits you relish and enable you to achieve more than would otherwise be possible.”
The pivotal question persists: will individuals genuinely embrace it?
