President Donald Trump has spent 20 months promising an economic boom.
But Friday’s positive jobs report made him feel frustrated.
He complained about inflation and interest rates instead of celebrating the gain of 162,000 jobs in August.
He rejected the economic idea that strong job growth can cause inflation, saying, “Success does not cause inflation.”
Trump’s second term has seen slower hiring and higher prices.
The economy has grown at about 2% each year, which is slower than during the Biden administration.
Trump blames high interest rates on government debt for his failure to deliver faster growth.
He has threatened to stop trade with foreign countries as a way to fight back.
The national debt has passed $40 trillion, and the 10-year Treasury rate rose to 4.79% on Friday.
Trump’s own policies, including tariffs, have partly caused the inflation he blames on others.
His economic approval rating was only 32% in midsummer, down from 50% in 2018.
Economists say his trust on growth and debt has suffered because his predictions do not match reality.
Trump says lower interest rates could push GDP growth to “12, 13, 14, 15%.”
But cutting rates could make inflation worse.
White House officials insist their policies are working.
They point to AI and tariffs as future growth drivers.
Yet analysts warn that even strong growth may not reduce budget deficits.
These deficits are set to exceed $3 trillion a year within ten years.
