Wall Street stocks fell Tuesday as oil prices kept climbing.
This raised concerns about high inflation.
The S&P 500 dropped 0.4%.
The Dow fell 190 points, and the Nasdaq slipped 0.5%.
The weak start to September followed a mostly positive August for major indexes.
Technology stocks weighed heavily on the market.
Microsoft fell 1.3%, and Advanced Micro Devices dropped 2.4%.
Their large market values give them strong influence.
Their growth has relied on borrowing, which gets costlier as interest rates rise.
Pressure also came from a sell-off in U.S. government bonds.
The 10-year Treasury yield rose to 4.77% from 4.75% late Monday.
The 2-year yield climbed to 4.37% from 4.34%.
Rising yields signal that investors see Treasurys as riskier.
This is partly due to growing government debt, which surpassed $40 trillion two weeks ago.
Oil prices drove much of the inflation pressure.
Brent crude rose 2.3% to $92.61.
The Strait of Hormuz is effectively shut down amid the U.S. war with Iran.
Higher energy costs have pushed up prices for gasoline and shipped goods.
Inflation remains above 3%.
Investors see a 66% chance the Fed will raise rates at its September meeting.
European markets fell, while Asian markets were mixed.
