Chinese officials said on Friday that Tesla and several Chinese carmakers are recalling more than 4 million vehicles.
Most of the recalls are about door handle safety problems.
Tesla is recalling about 2.98 million electric cars made in China or brought into the country.
This includes Model 3, Model Y, Model X, and Model S.
Chinese media say this is the largest recall this year.
The regulator said that in very serious situations, like a big crash that causes electrical failure, the handles could stop people from opening doors to get out.
They could also stop rescuers from getting in.
Tesla will update its software to lower these risks, the notice said.
Xiaomi is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles.
Leapmotor is recalling over 370,000 cars.
Geely and XPENG are also recalling some vehicles.
The reasons were similar, and most were about door handle problems.
These recalls come after China said in February that it will ban hidden car door handles starting next year.
These flush handles are common on Tesla and many Chinese EV models.
The official People's Daily newspaper said the large-scale recall is a safety upgrade before the 2027 ban.
It also said that competition in the new energy vehicle industry should be about safety standards, not just how fast companies innovate.
