La Banque fédérale de New York a indiqué qu'au début de l'année 2025, plus de 3 millions d'étudiants avec un prêt ont vu leur score de crédit diminuer fortement.

En mars 2020, le ministère de l'Éducation américain a suspendu les paiements des prêts étudiants fédéraux à cause de la pandémie. Ces paiements ont repris en 2023, avec une période de grâce d'un an.
