Trade taxes have made companies worried. Some big shops in the U.S. have already made prices higher, or said they will do it soon.
Donald Trump put new taxes on things coming into America from other countries. China did the same. Some taxes are lower now, but many are still there for businesses.
Companies pay taxes on things they buy from other countries. This makes things cost more. Shops then sell these things to us at a higher price. Some people think these taxes will help our country make more things here. But many things we buy are made in different countries. So, these taxes may make many things more expensive for us.
Some shops are raising prices now. Here are some big shops that say prices will go up because of trade problems:
Walmart is the newest store on the list. On Thursday, the big shop said it will sell things for more money. This is because it costs more to get the things because of new taxes.
Walmart buys many things from the U.S., but some things cost more now. The prices at Walmart went up a little in April and more this month. They will go up even more in June and July when people buy things for school.
John, who is in charge of money at the company, said that some important things will cost more. For example, bananas from Costa Rica now cost more. They were 50 cents, but now they are 54 cents. Also, car seats from China at Walmart may cost $100 more. They cost $350 now.
Rainey told a news group that they want to keep prices low. But they can only do that so much. Other stores have the same problem.
Mattel, who makes Barbie and Hot Wheels, said they may need to make some things cost more because of new taxes.
The toy maker makes some toys in China. It said prices may go up on May 5. The U.S. and China made a deal for 90 days to lower some taxes, but taxes are still more than before.
Mattel said they will make about 500 toys in other countries instead of China this year. Last year, they did this for 280 toys. For some popular toys, they will use factories in different countries.
In May, Microsoft made the price of Xbox consoles and controllers higher. For example, the Xbox Series S now costs $379.99 in the U.S. It was $299.99 before. The Xbox Series X now costs $599.99. It was $499.99 before.
Microsoft said on May 1 that some changes are hard. They said that the market and making games are costing more money.
Microsoft said the price of Xbox will change in Europe, the U.K., and Australia. Other countries will also get updates. Some new games will cost more this year, maybe $80.
Last month, Temu and Shein said prices are going up. They said this is because of changes in world trade.
In April, prices went up for many things. This was because of a rule about cheap goods from China. Shops used this rule to avoid taxes. The rule ended in May. The U.S. and China made a deal to help a little. But now, these goods have taxes. If they come by mail, the tax is now 54%. It used to be more.
Before this change, Temu seemed to stop sending things from China. They used items they already had in the U.S. The shop, owned by PDD Holdings, still shows many things from U.S. places. These have "no extra import costs" for buyers. Shein says that costs are "included in the price you pay," so buyers "never pay extra when it comes."
The company Stanley Black & Decker said prices went up in April. They plan to raise prices again in July because of higher taxes.
Donald Allan, Jr. said last month that they are changing their supply plans and looking at all choices to help keep prices low for customers. They also want to keep their business safe.
Procter & Gamble makes things like toothpaste and toilet paper. They say prices may go up for shoppers soon. This is because it costs more for them to make these things.
