Starbucks workers did not like the new rules for clothes at work, so they stopped working on Thursday.
Many Starbucks workers have stopped working. They don't like the new rules for clothes. This has happened in many shops since Sunday. The workers' union says over 2,000 people are striking in 120 shops.
Starbucks workers must now wear black shirts and jeans or khaki pants. This rule starts Monday in the U.S. and Canada.
Before, baristas could wear more dark colors and shirts with designs. Now, Starbucks wants green aprons to be seen better. This will help customers feel welcome in the stores.
Starbucks workers in a union said they should talk about the dress code together. The union speaks for workers in many Starbucks stores in the U.S.
Paige Summers works at Starbucks. She said Starbucks is not doing well. She said Starbucks should listen to its workers. Now, Starbucks cares more about things like what clothes the workers wear. Paige said that customers do not care about this if they wait a long time for coffee.
Some people said the company was wrong to sell Starbucks clothes online that workers can't wear at work. Starbucks said it would give each worker two free black T-shirts when they told them about the new dress rules.
On Wednesday, a Starbucks workers group said 1,000 workers did not work at 75 shops in the U.S. Starbucks said the strike did not change much for its 10,000 shops in the U.S. Some shops closed for a short time, less than one hour.
Starbucks said it would be better if the union tried to talk again, instead of just wearing black shirts to work and protesting. Most of our stores (more than 99%) are open and serving customers this week.
People who read the news had different ideas about the dress code. Some said the workers should not complain, because other shops also have rules about clothes. Others said the shop should make drinks better and keep workers happy, not worry about clothes.
Maddie Mucklow works at a Starbucks in Seattle. She likes the new rules.
Mucklow said, "I think the new clothes rules were hard for some people. But the rules help us know how to dress well and be ourselves."
Since 2021, Starbucks workers have been joining a union. Starbucks and the union still don't have an agreement, even after meeting in February 2024.
The workers' group said they told the labor board that Starbucks did not talk about the new rules for clothes.
