Starbucks baristas are not happy with the new uniform rules. They started a strike, and on Thursday, more people joined the strike.
The Starbucks Workers United union said that over 2,000 baristas at 120 Starbucks stores across the U.S. started a strike on Sunday. They are striking because they don't like the new rules about what they have to wear. This union represents workers at Starbucks in the U.S.
From last Monday, Starbucks changed the rules about what baristas can wear under their green aprons. Now, workers in the US and Canada at Starbucks-owned and licensed stores must wear plain black shirts and pants in khaki, black, or blue denim.
But the Starbucks Workers United, which represents workers in 570 of Starbucks' 10,000 stores in the US, said this dress code should be discussed in their group meetings.
Summers and other workers also complained about the company selling Starbucks clothes on the website that workers can't wear to work anymore. Starbucks said they would give each worker two free black t-shirts when they announced the new dress code.
On Wednesday, the Starbucks Workers Union said about 1,000 workers in 75 stores across the U.S. stopped working to protest. Starbucks said the protest didn't affect many of their 10,000 stores, and some stores closed for less than an hour because of it.
People who read the AP news had different opinions about the new dress code. Some people thought Starbucks workers shouldn't complain because many stores tell workers what to wear. Other people said Starbucks should focus on better drinks and prices, and on making workers happy, instead of what they wear.
Maddie Murcklow, who manages a Starbucks in Seattle, said she likes the new rules. She said, "To be honest, the new dress code was hard for our team, but it helps us treat each other well and show our own style."
Since 2021, Starbucks workers in the U.S. have been trying to create labor unions in their stores. Starbucks and the unions haven't agreed on a contract yet, but they plan to meet again in February 2024 to continue talking.
