Over 2,000 Starbucks baristas in 120 US stores have been striking since Sunday, according to Starbucks Workers United, the union representing the coffee giant's US employees, in protest against a new dress code.
From Monday, Starbucks has new rules about what staff can wear under their green aprons. The dress code says that employees in US and Canadian stores run or licensed by the company must wear plain black shirts and trousers in khaki, black, or dark blue denim.
The old dress code allowed baristas to wear more dark colors and patterned shirts. Starbucks said the new rules would make their green aprons stand out and give customers a sense of familiarity, as they try to create a warmer, more welcoming atmosphere in their stores.
However, Starbucks Workers United, the union representing staff in 570 out of Starbucks' 10,000 company-owned stores in the US, argued that the dress code should be a matter for collective bargaining.
On Wednesday, the Starbucks Workers Union announced that around 1,000 employees protested at 75 stores across the US. Starbucks responded that the strike had a limited effect on its 10,000 company-operated stores in the US, adding that some stores were only closed for under an hour due to the action.
Readers of the Associated Press who expressed their opinions held different views on the dress code. Some argued that Starbucks baristas didn't have much to complain about, pointing out that many retailers require employees to dress in a specific way. Others felt Starbucks should prioritize improving the quality and prices of their drinks, as well as ensuring worker satisfaction, rather than focusing on employee attire.
Since 2021, Starbucks Workers United has been organizing unions in Starbucks stores across the U.S. Despite agreeing to resume negotiations in February 2024, Starbucks and the union have not yet reached a contract agreement.
