Iran launched missiles toward U.S. targets in Jordan, Iranian state media said.
The move came after the U.S. military said it destroyed five Iranian oil tankers.
The tankers were hit following two attacks on a U.S. warship by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
The U.S. destroyed the vessels Kivik, Charminar, Horizon 1, Riesco, and Derya in the Gulf of Oman and near Kharg Island.
Central Command said crews were told to abandon ship before the strikes.
This action follows U.S. strikes on three Iranian tankers three days earlier.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the U.S. will not let Iran’s attacks go unanswered.
He said Iran will lose tankers every time it tries to hit U.S. ships.
Iran expert Danny Citrinowicz warned that such strikes risk more retaliation and harm to the global economy.
He said there is no military solution to the Strait of Hormuz problem.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy warned tanker crews near Kuwait and Bahrain to leave their vessels.
The U.S. also imposed new sanctions on Iran’s aviation industry.
Both sides seek control of the Strait of Hormuz, where about one-fifth of the world’s oil passed before the war.
