More than a week after flash floods killed hundreds near the China-Nepal border, we still know little about the victims in China.
The floods have killed over 1,000 people in both countries.
More than 4,500 people are still missing.
China has updated its death number only a few times.
Only top state media can enter the area.
China’s state media do not show the names or faces of the missing people or their families.
Instead, they show videos of help and rescue work.
At least 10 people in China have been held or fined.
They wrote on social media and asked questions about the official story.
The Nepalese side is very different.
Officials there update the lists of the dead and missing often.
Journalists have reported on the disaster, and sad families are shown.
Nepal also lets reporters from inside and outside the country visit the disaster areas.
China controls information very tightly in Tibet.
There, communication is watched closely.
Chinese journalists were told not to talk to the families of the dead or missing, says Human Rights Watch.
Some family members have spoken through channels outside China, like exiled media or social media accounts.
They hope to find news about their loved ones.
