Mako married Kei Komuro, a normal citizen, in 2021. She gave up her royal title because of Japanese rules. Now, they live in New York. Kei works there as a lawyer. Even though Mako used to be a princess, the palace decided to tell everyone the news after it was on TV and in newspapers.
Mako's parents and siblings were very happy for her and wished the family well. Mako and her husband met at university in Tokyo. Their wedding was delayed for four years because of money problems with Kei Komuro's mother. Mako did not want a special payment that she could have received for leaving the royal family.
