Rodrigo Duterte was the president of the Philippines. He wanted to win a seat in the election on Monday. Many people ran in the election.
He is in prison. He wants to be mayor.
In the Philippines, if you have a court case, you can still try to get a job in the government if a judge has not said you did something wrong.
People think Duterte will win as mayor of Davao. He was mayor for a long time before he was president. It is not easy to be mayor if you are in prison.
More than 68 million people in the Philippines can vote. They will choose people for different jobs in the government, like in the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Voting stopped at 7 p.m. But people who were waiting could still vote. Maybe we will know who won soon. The real result will be next week.
People are watching the Senate race. It is important for Sara Duterte. She is the Vice President and Duterte's daughter.
Sara Duterte wants to be president in 2028. But if the Senate says she did something bad, she must leave her job. She cannot work for the government. To keep her job, nine senators must say she is okay.
Maria Ela Atienza said the 2025 elections are important. They show who is strong for the 2028 elections.
If Sara Duterte is found guilty, her family might not have important jobs anymore. Her son Sebastian wants to be vice mayor in Davao. Her son Paolo wants to be in the House of Representatives again. Two grandsons are also running in local elections.
Marcos and Sara Duterte had problems, so Rodrigo Duterte had problems too.
On Monday, Sara Duterte voted in Davao. Marcos voted in his hometown, Batac City, in the north.
She said it is okay if other people win the election.
"My father will not be here. The vice mayor will be the mayor," she said.
Marcos made a video before the election. He asked people in the Philippines to vote.
Her father's friend, Apollo Quiboloy, wants to be a senator. But he is in prison because people say he did bad things. The police in the U.S. also want him for the same bad things.
Some people were hurt or died in different places during the voting.
Fighting between groups of people also made voting slow in some places. In Manila, some people said their names were not on the list for voting. Others were not happy about waiting a long time in the hot sun.
Reymark Marquez voted. He said the Marcos-Duterte team from 2022 did not do what they said they would do. He said the next election is not just about Duterte and Marcos. It is about choosing good leaders.
"I think this election is about the future for young people," said Diana Joy Acosta. She is 32 years old and has a new baby. She voted in Manila. She wants politicians who are honest and stop bad things happening for her baby's future.
