Saturday's tumultuous policy reversal, in the wake of an unsuccessful bid to install former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as Kim's successor, served to accentuate the People Power Party's profound leadership vacuum subsequent to the unseating of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his December declaration of martial law, an action that may well have irrevocably compromised the conservatives' prospects of securing a further governmental mandate.

Designated as the PPP's presidential hopeful on May 3, following a decisive primary victory where he garnered 56.3% of the vote over a reformist contender critical of Yoon's martial law, Kim, a steadfast conservative and erstwhile labor minister during Yoon's tenure, found himself subjected to a week-long campaign of fervent coercion by the PPP's leadership, a body predominantly comprising Yoon's adherents, aimed at compelling him to withdraw and endorse Han, whom they considered a more formidable challenger to the liberal Democratic Party's presumptive nominee, Lee Jae-myung.

Subsequent to the abortive unification negotiations between Han and Kim, the PPP’s extraordinary committee undertook the extraordinary measure, during the nascent hours of Saturday, of voiding its primary outcome, rescinding Kim’s candidacy, and enrolling Han concurrently as a constituent member of the party and its designated presidential contender. Nevertheless, this substitution necessitated ratification via a comprehensive party referendum, implemented by means of an automated telephonic poll, which ultimately repudiated the proposed alteration on Saturday evening.

“Though we are constrained from divulging the precise numerical outcomes, the ballot regarding the proposed substitution of the candidate was defeated by the slenderest of margins,” affirmed Shin Dong-wook, the party's spokesperson and legislator.
