Confronted by burgeoning internecine conflict preceding the impending June 3 election, South Korea's besieged conservative faction rescinded, only to subsequently reinstate mere hours later, the presidential nomination of Kim Moon Soo.
Saturday's tumultuous policy reversal, in the wake of an unsuccessful bid to install former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo as Kim's successor, served to accentuate the People Power Party's profound leadership vacuum subsequent to the unseating of former President Yoon Suk Yeol over his December declaration of martial law, an action that may well have irrevocably compromised the conservatives' prospects of securing a further governmental mandate.
Designated as the PPP's presidential hopeful on May 3, following a decisive primary victory where he garnered 56.3% of the vote over a reformist contender critical of Yoon's martial law, Kim, a steadfast conservative and erstwhile labor minister during Yoon's tenure, found himself subjected to a week-long campaign of fervent coercion by the PPP's leadership, a body predominantly comprising Yoon's adherents, aimed at compelling him to withdraw and endorse Han, whom they considered a more formidable challenger to the liberal Democratic Party's presumptive nominee, Lee Jae-myung.
Subsequent to the abortive unification negotiations between Han and Kim, the PPP’s extraordinary committee undertook the extraordinary measure, during the nascent hours of Saturday, of voiding its primary outcome, rescinding Kim’s candidacy, and enrolling Han concurrently as a constituent member of the party and its designated presidential contender. Nevertheless, this substitution necessitated ratification via a comprehensive party referendum, implemented by means of an automated telephonic poll, which ultimately repudiated the proposed alteration on Saturday evening.
“Though we are constrained from divulging the precise numerical outcomes, the ballot regarding the proposed substitution of the candidate was defeated by the slenderest of margins,” affirmed Shin Dong-wook, the party's spokesperson and legislator. Kim, who had vociferously decried the party's manoeuvre to supplant him as an “unforeseen political putsch,” was promptly reinstituted as the designated candidate and is poised to formally append his imprimatur with the electoral apparatus on Sunday, as per the party's communiqué.
“Now all things will be restored to their rightful order,” Kim asserted in a communique.
Kim, a septuagenarian who had been a conspicuous figure in labour activism during the 1970s and '80s, subsequently transitioned to a conservative political affiliation in the ensuing decade, citing the denouement of communist regimes as the catalyst for relinquishing his aspiration to be a "revolutionist"; he has since accumulated eight years as gubernatorial head of South Korea's Gyeonggi province and concluded three tenures within the National Assembly.
Han assumed the mantle of acting president in the wake of Yoon's legislative impeachment in December, followed by his formal deposition by the Constitutional Court in April; subsequently, he relinquished his office on May 2nd, embarking on a presidential campaign underpinned by the assertion that his extensive tenure in public service eminently qualifies him to steer the nation through the escalating geopolitical turbulence and exacerbated trade impediments precipitated by the directives of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Han, having previously exhorted the party faithful towards cohesion upon his candidature's endorsement, communicated via communiqué his "unreserved deference" to the collective will of the membership.
In recent opinion polls, Han and Kim have substantially trailed Lee, who spearheaded the Democrats’ drive to unseat Yoon and, on Thursday, derided the PPP’s attempts to alter candidacies, observing to reporters, “I have encountered instances of coerced unions but never of coerced cohesion.”
