The party's tumultuous volte-face on Saturday, following a fruitless endeavor to instate former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo in lieu of Kim, conspicuously illuminated the People Power Party’s profound leadership imbroglio in the wake of former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s summary removal consequent to his December imposition of martial law, an act which arguably precipitated the conservatives’ electoral Waterloo in their bid for governmental reinstatement.

Kim, a resolute conservative and former labor minister within the Yoon administration, was officially designated the PPP’s presidential nominee on May 3, having secured a decisive 56.3% of the primary ballot, thereby vanquishing a reformist adversary who had publicly censured Yoon’s imposition of martial law; however, the PPP’s governing echelon, largely beholden to Yoon loyalties, had dedicated the preceding week to intensely coercing Kim into relinquishing his candidacy and endorsing Han, positing that the latter possessed a more formidable prospect of prevailing against the ascendant liberal Democratic Party figurehead, Lee Jae-myung.

Subsequent to the breakdown in unification negotiations between Han and Kim, the PPP’s ad hoc committee undertook the unparalleled measure, early Saturday, of invalidating its primary, rescinding Kim’s nomination, and inscribing Han as both a party affiliate and their emergent presidential aspirant; nevertheless, this substitution necessitated ratification via a comprehensive party ballot executed through an automated telephony poll, which ultimately repudiated the alteration on Saturday evening.
