Labor Day began in the late 1800s.
It was a day to honor workers.
The first U.S. celebration was in New York City.
That was on Sept. 5, 1882.
About 10,000 workers marched.
President Grover Cleveland signed a law in 1894.
The law made the first Monday of September a legal holiday.
Most big stores and food stores will be open on Labor Day.
Many will have sales.
Costco will be closed.
Government offices are closed.
Post offices are closed.
Courts and schools are closed.
U.S. stock markets and banks are closed.
Standard FedEx and UPS pickup and delivery will not run.
Some critical services still run.
Millions of Americans plan to travel.
This is the last big summer weekend.
AAA says flights to top U.S. places are almost 20% costlier than last year.
Hotel prices have also gone up.
The average U.S. gas price is just under $4.10 a gallon.
That is up 90 cents from a year ago.
Cruises from U.S. ports are about 4% cheaper.
AAA tells travelers to check the weather.
It tells them to check tires, battery, and fluid levels before driving.
It also says to pack an emergency kit.
The kit has water, snacks, a flashlight, and jumper cables.
