On Monday, the government can send some people back to other countries fast. Before, they could talk to a judge first.
The court did not say why. One judge, Sonia, did not agree. Two other judges agreed with her.
Tricia McLaughlin from Homeland Security said they might send people to other countries soon. She said, "Get the planes ready." She also said this helps keep people in America safe.
But a judge said one plane to South Sudan would not go now.
The people on the May flight came from Myanmar, Vietnam, and Cuba. They did bad things in America. They could not go back home fast.
Their lawyer said they might go to prison, be hurt, or die if they return to South Sudan.
A judge in Boston said they can still talk about their problems in court. The people are now at a base in Djibouti.
This case is happening now. The government wants to send many people home. They live in the U.S. without papers.
Abigail Jackson from the White House said the President can make sure people follow immigration rules. He can send bad people who are not from the U.S. away. She said the court agrees with the President. He can send people who break the law away to make the U.S. safe again.
Sotomayor wrote that the court's decision is bad. She said it puts many people in danger. They could be hurt or die. She also said it helps the government, even if they did not follow the rules before.
The government thinks it is special. It can send people away. It does not tell them first. She wrote this. Two other judges said yes too.
South Sudan is a new and poor country. It had many fights after it became free from Sudan in 2011. Now, problems between leaders might start another big war.
The Justice Department said they are thinking about the paper to decide what to do next.
The court stopped a rule. This rule let immigrants say they were in danger in another country. They could say this even if they had no other ways to stay.
He saw that sending people to South Sudan in May was wrong. It was against his rule. He told the immigration officers to let these people talk to their lawyers. The immigration officers put the migrants in a big metal box in Djibouti. It was a difficult place for them and the officers.
Some countries do not want their people back from the U.S. So, the U.S. talked to Panama and Costa Rica. These countries will take the people. In May, some people went to South Sudan. They only knew a very short time before they left, Sotomayor said.
Murphy works for President Biden. He said people can go to other countries. But he said people must be able to say they might be in danger if they go to another country.
A man from Guatemala was sent to Mexico by mistake. He said bad things happened to him there. The government brought him back to the USA. This was the first time someone came back after being sent away since Trump was president for the second time.
The judges had a similar problem. Trump wanted to send people from Venezuela to a bad prison in El Salvador. It was hard for these people to go to court.
But the court stopped sending people away. They said people need time to ask a court for help before they leave.
The court helped Trump before. So, his government can stop many people from staying in the country. This will affect about one million people.
