A Massachusetts-based federal judge stymied President Trump's endeavours to overhaul the American electoral architecture, siding with a cohort of Democratic state attorneys general who contended the measures contravened constitutional precepts.
In a gambit to ostensibly safeguard electoral integrity, Donald Trump's March executive order sought to mandate proof of citizenship for voter registration, restrict ballot acceptance solely to those received on election day, and tether federal election funding to states' adherence to revised deadlines—a measure the White House defended as ensuring "free, fair, and honest elections." However, Judge Dennis J. Casper, in a rebuke to executive overreach, preemptively ruled that states were likely to prevail in legal challenges, asserting the Constitution's conspicuous absence of endowing the president with exceptional electoral prerogatives; furthermore, the ruling enjoined enforcement of provisions within the executive order compelling states to categorically reject any postal or absentee ballots arriving post-election day, marking the second juridical setback to Trump's electoral directive following a prior injunction against portions of the directive issued by a Washington D.C. judge.
