Mary Lou Retton, a well-known American gymnast, was arrested in her hometown in West Virginia. She was charged with driving after drinking alcohol. Police stopped her car on May 17 because it was driving in a strange way. When they stopped her, the police smelled alcohol and saw that she was speaking in a way that was hard to understand. They also saw a wine bottle in the car. Retton, who is 57, failed a test to see if she was drunk. She also said no to a breath test and a blood test. She was later let go from jail after paying $1,500. Her lawyer, Edmund J. Rollo, has not said anything about it yet. This happened after she was very sick last year with a rare type of lung infection. She had to go to the hospital, and her oxygen levels were very low.
