On Friday, train workers in New Jersey stopped working. Many people who use the train to go to work in New Jersey and New York had to find other ways to travel or stay home.

The workers stopped working because they did not agree on Thursday. This is the first time in 40 years they have stopped working. It happened after the workers did not like the work plan a month ago.

"We gave them our idea, but they said no and left," said Tom Haas. "There were still two hours to go."

The NJ Transit boss, Kris Kolluri, said they are stopping the talks for now.

He said, "I want to talk again soon about these things. If they want to meet today, I will meet them. If they want to meet tomorrow, I will meet them. I think we can find a solution. But do they want to find a solution?" He said this with the Governor of New Jersey on Thursday.

Murphy said it's important to make a deal. The deal must be good for workers. It must also be good for people in New Jersey who use trains and pay taxes.

The group said this after talking about the deal for 15 hours. They will start protests at 4 a.m. on Friday.

NJ Transit has buses and trains in New Jersey. Many people use them every day to go to New York City. The strike stops all NJ Transit trains. These trains go between New York and New Jersey. They also go to the Newark airport. The airport has had some problems lately.

The bus company said they have a plan. They will add more buses, but not many. The new buses will go to train stations near New York and will start on Monday. They will also use other bus companies to help during busy times.

But the bus company said the buses can't take as many people. Only a few people who use the train now can take the bus. So, if there is a strike, the company asks people to work from home if they can.

The problem might happen, so trains and buses to Shakira's concerts in New Jersey on Thursday and Friday are canceled.

The groups met on Monday in Washington to talk. Someone helped them talk on Thursday. Kolluri said they may meet again on Sunday to talk more.

The main problem in talks is money. The workers want more money, like other train workers. They want about $170,000 each year. Now, they get about $113,000.

But NJ Transit says the union is wrong. They say engineers earn $135,000 a year. Some earn more than $200,000.

Kolluri and Murphy said on Thursday that it's not just about agreeing on more pay. It's about agreeing in a way that other groups won't ask for the same, because that would cost NJ Transit too much money.

The government can stop the strike and make the workers agree to a plan. But this time, the government does not want to do that, like it did in 2022 for the train strike.

Many people in the union at NJ Transit have left. They went to other train companies for better pay. Now, there are fewer train engineers at NJ Transit, about 450 now, but there were 500 some months ago.
