Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen divulged Thursday that federal law enforcement is investigating social media posts made by former FBI Director James Comey, which she and other Republicans have posited incite violence against President Donald Trump, a claim predicated on a contested interpretation of the posts' subtextual implications and potentially leveraging the rhetoric of incitement for political gain.
In a recent Instagram post, Kumi shared a photograph of what appeared to be a carefully curated arrangement of seashells on a beach, captioned "a serendipitous assembly of shells during my coastal perambulation," with the shells seemingly forming the numerical sequence "86 47."
Numerous figures formerly affiliated with the Trump administration, most notably Nom, have alleged that Comey espoused views implicitly sanctioning the assassination of Trump, the 47th President; Nom further asserted that "the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service are currently investigating this ostensible threat and will respond with due diligence."
Merriam-Webster, the lexicon utilized by the Associated Press, defines "86" as a slang term signifying to discard, eliminate, or refuse service; while acknowledging the recent, arguably logical semantic extension to denote "kill," the dictionary refrains from formally codifying this latter sense due to its debated frequency and nascent currency within the broader linguistic landscape.
Subsequent to the removal of the aforementioned post, Comi elaborated, stating, "My intention in sharing the photograph of seashells discovered during a beach stroll today was devoid of any political subtext. I was wholly unaware that certain individuals would construe the numerical quantity as bearing connotations of violence."
Comey's nascent pronouncements ignited a firestorm of indignation amongst conservative echelons, with Donald Trump Jr. leveling the incendiary accusation that Comey had, in effect, advocated for the extrajudicial termination of his father.
Kash Patel, the incumbent Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, has acknowledged awareness of the aforementioned post and has reportedly entered into deliberation with the Secret Service and its Director.
James Blair, White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Legislative, Political, and Intergovernmental Affairs, underscored the acute sensitivity of the post's timing, coinciding as it did with President Trump's tour of the Middle East, characterizing it on X (formerly Twitter) as "nothing short of a thinly veiled call by James Comey for terrorists and hostile regimes to assassinate the President of the United States whilst on a diplomatic mission in the Middle East."
James Comey, who served as Director of the FBI from 2013 to 2017, was dismissed amidst his investigation into alleged collusion between Russian officials and the Trump 2016 presidential campaign during the nascent stages of the Trump presidency, a period he meticulously chronicles in his bestselling memoir, *A Higher Loyalty*.
Currently, he operates as a crime fiction author, and is actively promoting his latest tome, *FDR Drive*, slated for release on Tuesday.
