House Republicans appear to be backtracking on some of the steep cuts to the Medicaid program, part of a major tax bill, as they face pushback from more moderate Republican lawmakers who oppose ending near-free health care for their constituents.
According to the CBO report, under each of these options, Medicaid enrollment is projected to decrease, leading to a rise in the number of uninsured individuals.
This discovery has made it less certain if Speaker Mike Johnson can get President Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' passed before the deadline he set for Memorial Day.
Throughout this week, Speaker Johnson has been talking privately in his office at the Capitol. He has been meeting with moderate Republican members of Congress, especially those from areas where elections are very competitive. These members have warned him that big budget cuts would hurt the people they represent.
Upon the CBO report's release, the Democratic Party, who had requested it, issued an immediate response to the findings.
Following a late-night meeting on Tuesday, House Republicans suggested that Speaker Johnson and the Republican leadership were partially withdrawing from the most contentious proposed Medicaid changes regarding the federal matching fund rates allocated to states.
Jeff Van Drew, a Congressman representing New Jersey, asserted that these changes to Medicaid had been "derailed."
Additionally, New York State Representative Nick LaLota pointed out that President Trump himself said he was against cutting Medicaid. He also mentioned that many Republicans now agree that they should focus on other things instead of cutting Medicaid.
According to Councilman LaRota, other ideas include making people on Medicaid work, checking if they qualify twice a year instead of once, and stopping immigrants without legal papers from getting help.
Medicaid is a program jointly administered by both state and federal governments, serving approximately 71 million adults.
The Republican Party is exploring a range of options to curtail federal spending on the program, including reducing the percentage the federal government contributes to insured individuals' healthcare costs, which can occasionally reach 90%.
The CBO cautions that these alterations, while potentially yielding billions in cost reductions, could simultaneously result in approximately ten million individuals losing their Medicaid coverage.
