Huawei launched new chip technologies on Thursday.

The event took place at its yearly conference in Shanghai.

This announcement challenges global leaders like Nvidia.

It also shows the AI gap between China and the U.S. is getting smaller.

The event came days before a planned meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The meeting is expected in Washington on Sept. 24.

China has worked on its own technology for a long time.

U.S.-led restrictions blocked its access to advanced AI chips and chipmaking machines.

Huawei introduced the Atlas 960 SuperPoD computing cluster.

It is a faster successor to a model launched only months ago.

It brings gains in AI training and inference.

Huawei also plans to launch the Ascend 970 and 980 chip series in 2028 and 2029.

The company expects big gains in computing power.

George Chen of The Asia Group consultancy said the timing shows Beijing's confidence and ambition in technology.

Trump has downplayed calls by AI leaders to slow development for safety.

He says the U.S. must stay ahead of China.

Chen said AI moves so fast that no one can be sure of holding the lead forever.

Analysts say China's advanced work still often relies on U.S. chips.

This includes AI model training.

But Huawei makes its own advanced chips and leads Chinese chip developers.

Chinese AI companies increasingly use domestic chips.

Chen said Huawei's upgrade in just a year will increase U.S. worry about the AI competition.
