On Wednesday, a court in New York began hearing a case accusing Huawei Technologies Co. of conspiracy to commit extortion.

Federal prosecutors allege that the Chinese technology company committed a range of offences, including stealing technology from American firms, abusing the US financial system, and helping Iran to spy on its own citizens.

Other Western allies, such as Canada and the United Kingdom, have likewise blacklisted Huawei.

In his opening statement to a Brooklyn jury, Taylor Stout, a lawyer for the US Department of Justice, argued that Huawei had committed multiple crimes over a period of two decades.

However, defense attorney Brian Heberlig rejected these allegations, claiming that the prosecution was exploiting isolated anecdotes and the misconduct of a small number of individuals among Huawei's roughly 200,000 employees across 170 countries to portray the company and its three subsidiaries as a corrupt criminal enterprise.

Herberlig said, "There is no criminal blueprint."

He pointed out that jurors should bear in mind that "this case concerns real people whose careers and integrity are at stake."

The first witness called by the prosecution was Parham Bakhshti.

He grew up in Iran, later went to the United States to study, and became an American citizen in 2000.

In 2003, Bakhshti moved back to Iran in order to be closer to his wife's family.

He testified that he learned about Huawei in 2009 while working at a small but rapidly growing company that was bringing the internet to remote corners of Iran, and that he subsequently provided the U.S. government with confidential information about his dealings with Huawei.

Bakhshti said that he was initially full of enthusiasm, trying to bring internet access to small cities in Iran, but that he gradually came to believe that Huawei would not lend a hand.

He said, "They seem indifferent to the matter, as they have their own plans."

He said that during a meeting with Huawei employees, he realized that the Chinese company was pitching a plan to "analyze (Iranian) citizens and their online behavior," which left him feeling "angry."

Bakhshti claims that in 2011 he learned he was under investigation and subsequently left Iran.

In his opening statement, Haberlig told the jurors that they would see through what he called the prosecution's unreliable witnesses and would find that "the government's case simply does not hold up."

He also said they would find that some of the testimony against the company was motivated by "old grudges."

He mocked the prosecution's intention to present evidence in court to prove that a Huawei employee had photographed a competitor company's products at a trade show event.

He said the government had failed to mention that Huawei promptly dismissed the employee for this "foolish act."

Herbellig pointed out that this does not constitute evidence of "company-wide collusion."

He attributed Huawei's remarkable growth to its success in engineering, investment, innovation, and competition.

Huawei not only manufactures phones and other consumer electronics, but it has now been cut off from its other business lines.

Recently, as the artificial intelligence boom continues to drive up demand for microprocessors, Huawei has expanded its business reach into chip manufacturing.
