Aaron Sorkin made "The Social Network" in 2010, when he knew little about Facebook.

Now he has written and directed "The Social Reckoning," a new film about what the platform has become.

Sorkin says the movie focuses on Facebook's role in extremism and division.

Sony will release it on Oct. 9.

Sorkin was hesitant to return to the subject because the first film is highly praised.

He changed his mind after meeting whistleblower Frances Haugen and reporter Jeff Horwitz.

The new film stars Mikey Madison as Haugen and Jeremy Allen White as Horwitz.

Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg, who did not want the role again.

Sorkin began the project around 2019 after writing an op-ed to Zuckerberg.

He said Facebook allowed "crazy lies" to spread.

He also blames the company for the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

Zuckerberg and Meta have not commented on the film.

Sorkin has never met Zuckerberg.

He says he reverse-engineers the results of Zuckerberg's thinking.

Strong, however, emailed Zuckerberg and defended him during filming.

Sorkin notes that Facebook now has about 3 billion users, and 38% of Americans get news from it.
