New York has a new rule. It stops building big data centers for one year. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an order on Tuesday. This is the first rule like this in the U.S. The rule is for very large data centers. These centers have many computers. They use a lot of energy and water.
The rule wants to help the environment and the energy grid. Hochul said progress should not make bills high. It should not cause water shortages. The order stops state permits for new big data centers. It tells regulators to make rules. The rules are about energy use, water use, and other effects.
This decision is part of a big talk about AI rules. President Donald Trump told states not to stop the AI industry. Tech companies say such rules hurt jobs. They say the rules help China. About twelve states have similar rules. But few have passed them.
Dan Diorio of the Data Center Coalition said the ban will send investments to other places. Hochul's Republican opponent, Bruce Blakeman, does not like the rule. He said local governments should make their own deals with tech firms. New York is not a big place for the largest data centers yet.
