Elon Musk has indicated a provisional launch date of June 22nd for Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas.
Musk mentioned on his social media platform, X, that the planned date might change because Tesla is being extremely cautious about safety.
Investors, Wall Street analysts, and Tesla fans have been looking forward to the release of the self-driving taxis, especially since Musk announced earlier this year that the service would start in Austin sometime in June.
In a recent interview with CNBC, Musk explained his initial plans for self-driving taxis. These taxis will be watched remotely and restricted to specific safe areas of the city. He intends to start with about ten taxis and quickly increase the number, launching the service in Los Angeles, San Antonio, San Francisco, and other major cities.
For ten years, Musk has been promising fully self-driving cars "next year." However, the situation is more critical now because Tesla is actually starting a self-driving taxi service. This comes as sales of Tesla's electric cars have gone down due to more competition, the redesign of its popular Model Y car, and the negative effects of Musk's increased involvement in politics.
The Austin launch happened after Musk had a public argument with then-President Trump about the government's tax law. As a result, some experts were worried that Trump could get federal safety regulators to get involved if the robotaxis had any problems.
