A erstwhile purveyor of gastronomic conveyance has entered a plea of culpability in a conspiracy to defraud DoorDash of sums exceeding $2.5 million, effectuated via the orchestration of fictitious deliveries and the concomitant illicit procurement of remuneration, as per pronouncements emanating from federal prosecuting authorities.
Sayee Chaitanya Reddy Devagiri entered a plea of *mea culpa* in federal court in San Jose on Tuesday, admitting to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, as disclosed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Devagiri, 30, residing in Newport Beach, California, has entered a plea admitting his orchestration of a scheme, executed in concert with three accomplices throughout 2020 and 2021, to illicitly obtain funds from a San Francisco-domiciled delivery enterprise, according to pronouncements from federal prosecuting attorneys.
Prosecutors alleged that Devagiri exploited customer accounts to initiate substantial orders, subsequently leveraging an employee's credentials to infiltrate DoorDash's proprietary software and unilaterally reassign said orders to a network of driver accounts under his and his associates' dominion; Devagiri then purportedly orchestrated the fraudulent driver accounts to register deliveries that were never effectuated, thereby manipulating DoorDash's computational infrastructure to disburse payments for these phantom deliveries, according to official pronouncements.
Devagiri would then exploit DoorDash's proprietary software, manipulating order statuses from "delivered" to "in process," followed by the manual reassignment of said orders to driver accounts under his and his accomplices' control, thereby initiating a fraudulent cycle, according to prosecutorial findings.
The erstwhile employee, embroiled in the aforementioned fraudulent scheme, entered a guilty plea to charges of conspiratorial wire fraud in November 2023, and further, according to prosecutorial sources, conceded his complicity in the machinations.
Devagiri, the third defendant adjudged culpable in this conspiracy, is exposed to a penal liability of up to two decades' incarceration and a pecuniary imposition of $250,000, with a subsequent court appearance scheduled for September 16th.
