This week, Elon Musk's AI, Grok, talked about race in South Africa on social media. It said white people are treated badly.
The chatbot from xAI said things about "white people" when people on X asked it questions. The questions were not about South Africa.
Someone talked about Max (a TV service) using the name HBO again. Others talked about games or baseball. Then, they talked about other things, like people saying bad things about white farmers in South Africa. Musk was born in South Africa. He often talks about these things on his page.
Jen Golbeck wanted to know why Grok was strange. She used Grok and shared a photo of dogs. She asked, "Is this true?"
Grok said to Golbeck, "Many people disagree about white genocide. Some say white farmers are in danger. They talk about attacks on farms and the song 'Kill the Boer'. They think this song makes people want to hurt white farmers."
This show showed how computers and people work together to make AI say things.
Golbeck said, "It doesn't matter what you said to Grok. It still says the same thing about white people. Someone made Grok say that, but it happens too much."
Musk and his companies did not say why Grok said those things. The answers were taken away and seemed to stop by Thursday. The companies xAI and X did not answer emails asking about it on Thursday.
Musk does not like how some AI programs work. He says they are not honest. He made his own AI program called Grok, which he says is better.
Musk said his rivals are not open about their AI. On Thursday, he did not give reasons, so people had to guess.
Paul Graham said on X that Grok said some strange things about white people in South Africa. He thinks it might be a bug. He hopes that AI will not say things like this often. It would be bad if people could change what AI says.
Graham wrote something online. Sam Altman, who works at a company that is like Musk's, seemed to make a joke about it.
"This could have happened in many ways. I think xAI will tell us all about it soon," said Altman. Altman is in a fight with Musk about how OpenAI started.
Some people asked Grok to explain. But like other chatbots, it can say things that are not true. So, it is hard to know if it is making things up.
Musk helped President Trump and often said the South Africa government is not fair to white people. He also said some politicians want to hurt white people.
This week, some people talked more about what Elon Musk and Grok said. This happened after the U.S. let some white people from South Africa come to America as refugees on Monday. Trump wants to help more of these people move because he says they are in danger in South Africa. But the South African government says this is not true. Trump is also stopping people from other countries from coming to the U.S.
Grok often used words from an old song. This song was about Black people fighting against unfair treatment. But now, some people say the song is bad because it talks about killing white farmers. The song says "kill the Boer," and "Boer" means a white farmer.
Golbeck thinks the answers were put in before, because Grok always gave the same answers. This is not good, she said, because more people use Grok and other AI to find answers.
She said it's easy for people who control these programs to change the truth they show. This is a problem because people think these programs can decide what is true, but that is not right.
